Bethany Chew Named Conference Champion

(St. Louis)- Second-year pharmacy student and track athlete at St. Louis College of Pharmacy (STLCOP) Bethany Chew, of Covington, Ind., became the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC) women's javelin throw champion at the conference championship track meet on April 27 in Berea, Ky. Chew's throw of 31.83m (104-0.5) won the event by nearly two meters. She currently holds the STLCOP record for women's the javelin throw at 35.75m (117-03).

Chew also earned all-conference honors as a member of STLCOP's second-place 4x400m and 4x800m relay teams. The two relay teams set new school records at the meet (4:40.31 and 11:39.93).

Chew is the daughter of Dean Chew, and a '11 graduate of North Vermillion High School.

Traveling to the conference meet with only 10 athletes, the STLCOP Eutectics returned to St. Louis with 11 All-Conference performances and 119 points. Chew contributed 14 points to the STLCOP Eutectics' second place finish (of six teams competing). STLCOP head coach David Baker was named KIAC Women's Track and Field Coach of the Year.

Last fall, Chew was the number-four runner for the STLCOP women's cross country team. After this spring, her second year on the STLCOP track and field team, she currently holds school records in the indoor High Jump (1.22m/4-00) and the 1600m Sprint Medley (5:12.65) as well as the three outdoor records she set this year. Chew is the daughter of Dean and Debbie Chew of Covington, Ind. She is a 2011 graduate of North Vermillion High School where she holds two swim team records and was all-conference in softball, cross country, and track and field.

In its 20th year of existence, the St. Louis College of Pharmacy Athletic Program is a member of the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC) and includes women's volleyball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's track & field, men's and women's tennis, and softball.

The College's mascot - the Eutectic - is a common term in pharmacy describing the scientific process of two solids being combined to form a liquid. It is the perfect metaphor for the St. Louis College of Pharmacy's Athletic Program - combining athletics and a demanding academic program.
