Andrew Steppleman Completes International Service Trip

2013 Aug 2

Andrew Steppleman of Crystal City, Mo. was one of 10 St. Louis College of Pharmacy students who spent part of their summer vacation working with Habitat for Humanity International.

Steppleman, a fourth-year student at the College, spent a week in the town of Katowice, Poland, converting an old building into a homeless shelter for women and children. The students took part in all aspects of construction from hauling hundreds of buckets filled with sand to hanging drywall.

"Exposing our students to other cultures and other ways of thinking will help them have a better appreciation of our world," says Ken Schafermeyer, director of international initiatives at the College. "They'll have a deeper understanding of their own values and may develop new ones as well."

Schafermeyer is a veteran traveler and regularly leads students on international service trips. Students chronicled their trip to Poland on stlcoppoland2013.wordpress.com.
